The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie is a 2004 theatrical live-action/animated film from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies. It was about SpongeBob and Patrick going to Shell City to find King Neptune's crown and save Mr. Krabs. The movie was released on November 19, 2004.

Plot[]

The movie begins with a bunch of pirates who find a treasure chest full of movie tickets for the SpongeBob movie. The pirates sing the SpongeBob SquarePants theme song while sailing to the movie theater and then sit down and watch the film. The narrator begins the story with Bikini Bottom's popular undersea eatery, The Krusty Krab restaurant, where chaos is happening involving a customer who ordered a Krabby Patty with cheese, but it had no cheese on it. Then SpongeBob comes to the rescue to help the nervous customer named Phil who is crying and states that he "has a wife and two beautiful children". SpongeBob asks Phil for a favor to "say cheese" and he puts cheese on the Krabby Patty and Phil is satisfied. The crowd cheers and gives three cheers for the manager shouting "hip, hip, hooray!" but the alarm clock rings and the dream ends. SpongeBob wakes up on March 7th and prepares for the managerial promotion by singing "I'm ready, promotion" and brushes his teeth, puts on his pants, and washes up for the morning. Meanwhile Squidward is taking a shower in his house and SpongeBob thanks him in his managerial inception speech today. Squidward kicks SpongeBob out the window and meets Patrick who puts on his pants and they sing the Goofy Goober song. SpongeBob gets ready for work at the ceremony and Patrick wishes him good luck and tells him about the surprise later.

Mr. Krabs makes the announcements and decides that Squidward is the new manager because he didn't feel that SpongeBob was mature enough to handle the job because he is just a kid. SpongeBob is upset and walks away sadly. Then Patrick floats to the ceremony naked and shouts "hooray for SpongeBob!" and the stand burns down. Later that evening Plankton sneaks into King Neptune's castle and steals his crown while Neptune is sitting down on his throne. King Neptune finds out that his crown is stolen and finds a note that says "I stole your crown, signed Eugene Krabs". Plankton flies away and passes by the Goofy Goober's Ice Cream restaurant.

Meanwhile at Goofy Goober's, SpongeBob is crying in the Nut Bar because he is disappointed that he didn't get the promotion. Patrick finds him and cheers him up. SpongeBob explains to Patrick that "he wasn't promoted because Mr. Krabs thinks that they're kids". The waiter gives Patrick his Goober Meal and gives him a toy. SpongeBob decides to head home but the waiter gives Patrick a Triple Gooberberry Sunrise Sundae and SpongeBob says he would like one of those. Later SpongeBob and Patrick eat too much ice cream sundaes and get drunk. The next morning they wake up sober and the waiter tells them "it's 8:00 in the morning, go scrape up your friend and get going". SpongeBob realizes that it's 8:00 AM and he's late for work.

Meanwhile at The Krusty Krab 2, Mr. Krabs shows Squidward to keep a sharp eye for paying customers as the new manager of The Krusty Krab 2. Then King Neptune and Mindy Mermaid arrive at The Krusty Krab 2 and Mr. Krabs states that "he's got money"! Mr. Krabs updates the menu for King Neptune and changes the prices to $101.00 for a Krabby Patty with Cheese as he enters the restaurant. King Neptune finds Mr. Krabs and accuses him of stealing the crown. SpongeBob arrives at the restaurant drunk and says "he has worked for them for many years and always thought he was a great boss, but now realizes that he's a great big jerk. SpongeBob says he deserved that manager's job that Mr. Krabs didn't give him and said he was a kid, convinces him that he's 100% man", and he blows a long raspberry at him and makes his point. Then King Neptune burns Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob states that he and Patrick will find his crown in Shell City and save his boss. King Neptune then freezes Mr. Krabs and Mindy warns SpongeBob and Patrick that the road to Shell City can be dangerous because of crooks, killers, and monsters everywhere, and a giant Cyclops who guards the city and preys on innocent sea creatures. Mindy gives them a Magical Bag of Winds that she stole from her father so that when they find the crown they can open the bag and it would blow them back home. Mindy wishes them good luck and knows their names. Patrick flirts with Mindy when she knows his name and he stares at her. Mindy says goodbye to SpongeBob and Patrick so they tell Mr. Krabs that they will be back to return the crown so King Neptune can unfreeze Mr. Krabs and SpongeBob can get the job. SpongeBob and Patrick wish Mr. Krabs and Squidward good luck and get ready to go on their journey.

SpongeBob shows Patrick the Patty Wagon, a hamburger car that Mr. Krabs uses for promotional reasons. It includes a sesame seed finish, steel belted pickles, grill leathered interior, and under the hood, a fuel-injected French fryer with dual overhead grease traps. Patrick is amazed and thought SpongeBob didn't have a driver's license. SpongeBob explains that "you don’t need a license to drive a sandwich". Then SpongeBob and Patrick drive the Patty Wagon and head on their way to Shell City.

Meanwhile at The Krusty Krab 2, Plankton enters the restaurant and steals the Krabby Patty secret formula. Plankton finds out that Mr. Krabs is already frozen by King Neptune, so he takes the secret formula and uses it to make Krabby Patties at the Chum Bucket, leaving Mr. Krabs to cry a tear while frozen after losing his formula.

Meanwhile, SpongeBob and Patrick stop at the gas station and ask the gas attendants to fill up the tank. The gas attendants ask if SpongeBob and Patrick want mustard or ketchup, so they laugh at them. Patrick asks if they're laughing at us but SpongeBob says they're laughing next to us. The gas station attendants ask them where the two dumb kids are heading to. SpongeBob explains that they're not kids and that they're men because they're going to get King Neptune's crown in Shell City. The gas station attendants tell them that's the place with the killer Cyclops. SpongeBob says that's right. The gas attendants say that the two fish sticks ain't gonna last 10 seconds over the county line. SpongeBob says that they will see about that, and a burglar tells them to step out of the car and steals the car and drives it away. SpongeBob and Patrick ask the gas attendants how many seconds they survived over the county line, and he said 12. SpongeBob and Patrick say "in your face" and they walk away down the road to Shell City to prove them that they can survive.

Meanwhile in Bikini Bottom, Perch Perkins reports the news that Plankton is selling Krabby Patties at the Chum Bucket, and he finds out how. Perch Perkins asks Plankton the news to all of Bikini Bottom about how he got the Krabby Patty. Plankton responds to Perch Perkins that "before Eugene Krabs was frozen by King Neptune, he was finding a secret wish to sell the Krabby Patty formula in his absence at the Chum Bucket and not to let the flame die out". Then Plankton cries and relieves himself by getting a Chum Bucket helmet and tells Perch Perkins to buy a bucket helmet with every purchase, so he gives a helmet to Perch Perkins and sells free Bucket Helmets for everyone. Plankton goes to the kitchen and tells his computer wife Karen that he is happy for his success and says to her that Evil Plan Z is working perfectly. However, Karen says that SpongeBob and Patrick are going after the crown. Plankton tells Karen that Evil Plan Z is way ahead of them and has a vicious cold-blooded predator named Dennis to defeat SpongeBob and Patrick.

Meanwhile Dennis rides his motorcycle with his license that says "I Kill U" and his boot which says "Your Head Here". Then Dennis picks up a sesame seed and investigates it. The gas station attendants ask Mr. Dennis if his hat takes ten gallons, and they laugh. So Dennis gets mad and rips their mouths off and drives away.

Back at SpongeBob and Patrick, they are still walking down the road looking for the car and they see a sign that says "Shell City - Only Five Days Away, By Car" and then Patrick suddenly finds their car parked at a bar called the Thug Tug. SpongeBob finds out the key is missing so they go inside the Thug Tug and look for it. SpongeBob finds the key in someone's pocket in the bar so they decide to create a distraction so they can get the key. Patrick gets everybody's attention and says he has to use the bathroom, and the guy says it's right over there. SpongeBob washes his hands and asks Patrick how he calls that a distraction. Then SpongeBob plays with the soap dispenser and makes a bubble party with the bubbles. Then the boss finds them blowing bubbles and tells the people the rules. After that, the DJ plays the Goofy Goober Theme Song on the Record Player and tests them how long they can listen to the song without singing. Eventually the mock fish says "Goofy Goober, yeah" and the boss asks them which one it was, and the mock fish say "they've never eaten at Goofy Goober's yeah". So the people at the Thug Tug find out that they've got a double baby. SpongeBob and Patrick get out of the Thug Tug and Patrick gets the key and they drive away with the Patty Wagon on the way to Shell City.

Meanwhile in Bikini Bottom, Squidward goes outside and rides his bike down the street. Squidward sees that everyone has a bucket helmet and asks the lady in the car where everyone has the horrid headware, and she says that they are all from the Chum Bucket where Plankton is giving them away free with every Krabby Patty. Then Squidward goes to the Chum Bucket and asks Plankton why he's selling Krabby Patties to everyone. Plankton says that he is selling Krabby Patties with a free helmet with every purchase. Squidward tells Plankton that he listens to public radio and realizes that Plankton stole the crown so that King Neptune would freeze Mr. Krabs and Plankton would get the formula. Plankton starts to activate helmet brain control devices and locks the helmets on the heads and turns the Bikini Bottomites into slaves so that he can take over the world.

Back at SpongeBob and Patrick, they are driving in a pile of skeletons and Patrick states to SpongeBob that "a bubble blowing double baby doesn't belong out here, in man's country". SpongeBob states that if they blew that bubble, then that would make them the bubble double blowing baby. Then Patrick finds a free ice cream stand so they stop by and SpongeBob orders ice cream there. Patrick asks him to get him a chocolate, and SpongeBob orders two scoops, not realizing that the ice cream stand is a fake and the ice cream lady is not real. Then SpongeBob goes back in the car and they drive away from the monster in the trench.

Meanwhile, Dennis finds a bubble foam and blows it when the Thug Tug guy finds him with the bubbles and tells him not to blow bubbles around here. Then Dennis kicks the guy down the Thug Tug boat and it sinks, so Dennis drives his motorcycle away.

SpongeBob and Patrick escape from the ice cream and the monster so they jump out of the monster's mouth and the car gets lost in the trench. SpongeBob and Patrick lose their car and find out that the road continues down the deep and dangerous trench. Patrick finds a staircase that goes down the trench, but it makes dangerous noises. So SpongeBob decides to go home thinking that he will never survive the trench because he thinks it's man country and that they're just kids. Patrick tries to tell SpongeBob that they're not kids, but SpongeBob says that they blow bubbles, eat ice cream, and they worship a dancing peanut and don't belong out here. SpongeBob says that Patrick has been wearing the same Goofy Goober Peanut Party underpants for 3 years straight, and Patrick calls that worship and starts crying about it. SpongeBob tells Patrick to pull up his pants. However, Mindy finds them and tells them they can't go home. Mindy warns them that they are the only ones left who can get the crown because things have got a lot worse since they left Bikini Bottom (aka Planktopolis). Back at Bikini Bottom, Plankton is turning everyone they know into slaves. Squidward, Sandy, Mrs. Puff, and even Gary. Mindy's father King Neptune can't do anything because he's too distracted by his bald spot to do anything. So Mindy tells them they can't quit because the fate of Bikini Bottom rests in their hands. Mindy tells SpongeBob and Patrick that it doesn't matter if they're kids, because kids rule. They don't need to be a man to do this, and they just need to believe in themselves. SpongeBob and Patrick believe that everyone they know is a goner, so they start crying and feel ashamed. Meanwhile, Dennis knocks over a pile of skeleton bones and laughs maniacally.

Mindy tries to cheer them up and decides to turn SpongeBob and Patrick into men with her Mermaid Magic. SpongeBob and Patrick cheer and Mindy gets them ready. Mindy tells them to close their eyes, spin around three times, and keep their eyes shut, with her Mermaid Magic, and her one tail fin, she commands the two of them to turn into men, and tells them to open their eyes, and they get mustaches. SpongeBob and Patrick have a mustache and they cheer. Mindy ask them if they can make it to Shell City now that they are men, while SpongeBob and Patrick play with their mustaches. Mindy asks them again and SpongeBob and Patrick say that they can and they are not afraid of anything because they're invincible, but Mindy tells them that she didn't say that.

SpongeBob and Patrick jump off the trench and cheer about their new mustaches, and SpongeBob asks Patrick why they jumped down the trench instead of taking the stairs, and Patrick said "because of the dangerous noises". Then SpongeBob and Patrick landed on the ground and survived the trench. SpongeBob told Patrick that this happened because the mustaches worked because they were invincible. So SpongeBob and Patrick sing "Now That We're Men" and become friends with the monsters. Eventually, SpongeBob and Patrick find a sign that says "Shell City - Dead Ahead". However, SpongeBob and Patrick call the monsters "hideous and disgusting" after making it past them once they make it near Shell City, so the monsters get upset and leave. But SpongeBob says he didn't mean them because they were awesome.

So SpongeBob and Patrick say they may be there in one more verse, but suddenly Dennis finds them and tells them that he is hired to exterminate them, and SpongeBob and Patrick laugh. So they show Dennis their mustaches, and Dennis rips them off because he thinks they still have a piece of salad stuck to their lip from lunchtime. Then SpongeBob finds out that they were fake and Dennis shows them a real mustache on his face. Patrick asks him if he's a mermaid, but Dennis tells them that Plankton was very specific and said that he wanted Dennis to step on them so that they wouldn't find out that he stole the crown, and Dennis admits that he's said too much. Dennis shows them his boot and Patrick says that it's a big boot, and Dennis says that it will only hurt a lot, and he laughs. Suddenly, a bigger boot smashes Dennis and saves SpongeBob and Patrick's lives. SpongeBob and Patrick thank the Stranger and ask the Stranger if he's okay, but then they find out that it's the Cyclops, so they run away screaming and the Cyclops catches them and takes them to Shell City.

SpongeBob and Patrick wake up at Shell City in a giant glass fish bowl and SpongeBob wonders where they are. Patrick says that they are in a wall of psychic energy, but SpongeBob tells him that it's a giant glass bowl. SpongeBob finds some fish folk in the shop. SpongeBob and Patrick call them out for help, but they realize that those fish are dead. The Cyclops finds SpongeBob and Patrick in the fish bowl so he gets his evil instruments of torture, which are Elmer's Glue and Google Eyes. So the Cyclops puts the glue on a clam knick knack and the Google Eyes on the glue and makes an Alexander Clam Bell. SpongeBob tells Patrick that he's killing sea animals and turning them into smelly knick knacks, and he thinks that they are next. Then the Cyclops catches SpongeBob and Patrick and puts them in a heat lamp, leaving SpongeBob and Patrick there to die. SpongeBob tells Patrick that the heat is so intense from the lamp that they can't move. SpongeBob is disappointed that they are unable to save themselves, but Patrick says they are unable to get the crown, save the town, and Mr. Krabs. SpongeBob's arm falls off and Patrick puts it back on and SpongeBob thanks him. SpongeBob tells Patrick that it seems like everything that everyone in Bikini Bottom said about them was true, and Patrick asks if it was that they were attractive, but SpongeBob says that it was because they were kids. SpongeBob states that they didn't come close to the crown and let everybody down and failed. However, Patrick tells SpongeBob to look at the sign and see, "Shell City - Marine Gifts and Sundries". SpongeBob then realizes that Shell City is a gift shop, and he finds King Neptune's crown for $7.00. Then SpongeBob realizes that they made it. SpongeBob and Patrick start drying up and crying while singing the Goofy Goober song and then they die off.

Meanwhile inside the movie theater, the pirates watching the movie start crying and feel sorry for the end of SpongeBob. The parrot tells the pirates to look at the screen. Then the captain says the bird is right because there is the tear of the Goofy Goobers. Then the tear melts and moves down the pole and falls down into the electric outlet and electrocutes the heat lamp and power. Then the steam from the power goes up the air and goes up into the fire extinguishers and the water sprinklers spray the gift shop and spray SpongeBob and Patrick, and they come back to life. SpongeBob and Patrick revive and they say that they're alive again. Then the pirates watching the movie cheer and spill their popcorn. SpongeBob and Patrick go to get the crown and they catch it at the count of 3, and the Cyclops grabs the crown. SpongeBob and Patrick find out that the fish come back to life from the water sprinklers and they take revenge on the Cyclops. Even some other fish including a few seahorses, a pufferfish who is believed to be Mr. Puff, some starfish who are believed to be Patrick's relatives, and some Mariachi band fish take revenge on the Cyclops and defeat him. The Mariachi fish knock on the Cyclops' head and squirt Elmer's Glue on the Cyclops and win victory from the Cyclops.

SpongeBob and Patrick leave Shell City and head back to Bikini Bottom. SpongeBob asks Patrick for the Magical Bag of Winds, and Patrick gives it to him. SpongeBob reads the instructions saying, Step 1 - Point bag away from home, Step 2 - Plant feet firmly on ground, Step 3 - Remove string from bag releasing the winds. However, Patrick releases the bag before SpongeBob tells him when they're ready. After the bag is gone, SpongeBob is disappointed and worries how they will get back to Bikini Bottom now. Suddenly, David Hasselhoff comes by and says he can help take them home. SpongeBob asks him who he is, and David Hasselhoff tells them his name, and SpongeBob and Patrick cheer hooray. SpongeBob asks him where his boat is, and Hasselhoff laughs. Then he swims back to Bikini Bottom and takes them back home and SpongeBob and Patrick ride on his back and say "next stop, Bikini Bottom".

Meanwhile, back at Bikini Bottom, Plankton tells Mr. Krabs that today is March 14th, also known as "the day that Krabs fries" and Plankton laughs. Then King Neptune arrives at The Krusty Krab 2 and Plankton tells Mr. Krabs to guess who's here.

Back at the ocean, SpongeBob and Patrick are boarding David Hasselhoff and Patrick finds an unidentified flying object off the line quarters, which happens to be the bigger boot. Then Dennis appears on the boot and is alive who finds SpongeBob and Patrick. Dennis wonders if they miss him.

Back at Bikini Bottom, King Neptune tells Mr. Krabs that his 6 day suspension is up, but Mindy tells King Neptune that he could give Mr. Krabs more time, but King Neptune thinks Mindy is stalling him. Then Mindy distracts him and says that she is stalling him and King Neptune gets mad.

Back on the Hasselhoff, Dennis tries to exterminate SpongeBob and Patrick, but SpongeBob tells Patrick to run. Patrick states that he's tired of running, but Dennis kicks him onto David Hasselhoff's leg. SpongeBob runs to save Patrick and Dennis chases him there. SpongeBob jumps to the other leg to save Patrick and makes it to the other side. SpongeBob gives Dennis 5 Goober dollars, which are legal tender at any participating Goofy Goober's, but Dennis says that it will take a lot more than 5. SpongeBob gives Dennis bubbles, which are fun at parties, and Dennis' eyes burn so he throws SpongeBob and Patrick saves him. Dennis is through with messing around and says "see you later fools" and he gets hit by a toll booth and a lifeguard operating the toll booth. Patrick says "see you" to Dennis and they head back home.

Back in Bikini Bottom, Mindy distracts King Neptune and states that he thinks that she is stalling, but King Neptune has had enough of this nonsense. Then King Neptune tells Mindy to wait in the carriage and locks the door. Mindy worries and tells SpongeBob to hurry.

Then David Hasselhoff arrives at Bikini Atoll and tells SpongeBob that Bikini Bottom is directly below. SpongeBob says that they will never be able to float down in time. Hasselhoff asks who says anything about floating. Then he launches the control and holds SpongeBob and Patrick on deck. Then the 10 second countdown to liftoff happens and they start launching. King Neptune says that it's time for Mr. Krabs to fry and Mindy denies it, while Plankton says yes. However, while King Neptune is almost ready to fry Mr. Krabs, SpongeBob and Patrick land in Bikini Bottom at The Krusty Krab 2 and launch the crown back to King Neptune. Back at Bikini Atoll, David Hasselhoff says he's done good, but the fry burns him on the boat.

SpongeBob and Patrick arrive in Bikini Bottom and are happy that they made it home, and Mr. Krabs cheers with them. King Neptune finds his crown and kisses it. Mindy Mermaid sees SpongeBob and Patrick back home and thanks them for their good work, and Patrick flirts with Mindy and gives her a kiss. Then Plankton claps for them and opens the King Size Chum Bucket helmet for King Neptune. Plankton's employees come into The Krusty Krab 2 and make Plankton cheat. Plankton tells SpongeBob that he didn't have a chance to defeat him because Plankton is an evil genius and SpongeBob is a kid. SpongeBob explains that he has gone through a lot in the past 6 days, 5 minutes, and 27 1/2 seconds. But he's learned in all that time that "you are who you are". But that was okay because SpongeBob did everything they said a kid couldn't do. SpongeBob made it to Shell City, beat the Cyclops, rolled the Hasselhoff, and brought the crown back. Then SpongeBob sings the "Goofy Goober Rock" song and destroys all the helmets and saves everyone. Plankton tries to stop them but the people saved from the helmets step on Plankton and he goes to jail. Plankton says he was just kidding but the police arrest him and put him in the nanovan ambulance and Plankton gets arrested.

King Neptune thanks Mindy for her help with getting the crown back. Mindy tells King Neptune that he forgot to unfreeze Mr. Krabs. Mr. Krabs is confused when King Neptune sets him to "Real Boy", and then he sets Mr. Krabs back to unfrozen, and Mr. Krabs is happy. King Neptune apologizes for falsely freezing him. Mr. Krabs apologizes for doubting him and says that's a mistake he won't make again. Then Mr. Krabs says he will do something for SpongeBob that he should have done 6 days ago. Then Mr. Krabs tells Squidward that he knows who rightfully deserves to wear that manager pin, and Squidward couldn't agree more. The customers say "Hooray for SpongeBob" and cheer for SpongeBob but SpongeBob says that there's something he needs to say first that he doesn't know how to put. Then Squidward says that "after going on that life changing journey, you now realize you don't want what you thought you wanted. What you really wanted was inside of you all along". But SpongeBob says that he just had to say that "your fine was down". Then SpongeBob said "manager, this is the greatest day of my life". Then the end credits roll.

At the end of the movie, the pirates pick up the end credits and the usher says that they have to leave. The pirates tell the usher to "say that again if you dare", and she says "you folks have to leave" and the pirates say okay. Then the pirates leave and the usher cleans up the popcorn in the movie theater and the movie ends with the Paramount logo. The End.

Critical reception[]

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie received mostly positive reviews among both critics and fans that a second film was released in 2015 and a third film that was released in China in May 2020, in Canada in August 2020, and in the United States in 2021. A fourth film is scheduled to be released by 2026.

Sequels[]

The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie became a huge success that a sequel to the film, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water was released in 2015. A third film The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run was released in China in May 2020, in Canada in August 2020, in the United States in 2021, and around the world in Summer 2021. Paramount Pictures plans to release a fourth SpongeBob movie by 2026.
